Ornamental grasses have held a special place in our esteem for 20 years. When Dave Babikow founded Emerald Coast Growers in 1991, grasses were our first crop. They have remained our signature offering ever since, even as we’ve expanded into perennials and other ornamentals.

Ornamental grasses have enjoyed a surge of popularity in the last decade or two, but their presence in America’s landscape dates back much farther. Grasses were a mainstay of Victorian-era gardens and have never really been absent from the New World scene since.

Avant-garde designers sparked a grass renaissance here in the 1970s. Americans fell in love all over again, and the honeymoon is still going strong. Emerald Coast Growers played Cupid by giving wholesale growers a broad spectrum of varieties in a standardized, easy-to-finish format.

Grasses have taken their rightful place alongside perennials, annuals and shrubs as an expected, respected, profitable category. There truly is a grass for every reason, running the gamut from tiny to towering, from subtle complement to exuberant focal point.
